People aged 65 years or older are offered vaccinations against influenza and covid-19

We know that a high age is the strongest risk factor for becoming severely ill from influenza and covid-19.

The risk of becoming severely ill from influenza and covid-19 is greatest if you also suffer from, for example, heart or lung disease or diabetes, but the risk is also higher for elderly people who are otherwise healthy. You can end up more weakened by the diseases than younger people because it takes longer for you to recover.

If you are aged 65 years or older, we therefore recommend that you should be vaccinated against both influenza and covid-19. You can be vaccinated from 1 October 2023 until 15 January 2024. The vaccination is free, and it is entirely up to you whether you want to accept the offer.

Even if you have been vaccinated earlier, it is important that you are vaccinated again, as the vaccines become less effective over time and also because new variants of influenza and coronavirus emerge every year. By being vaccinated again, you make sure that you are protected against the diseases in the best possible way this winter.

The vaccination reduces your risk of becoming infected with influenza and covid-19. If you do become infected, the risk of becoming severely ill is reduced.

Free vaccination

If you are aged 65 years or older, you can be vaccinated against influenza every year between 1 October and 15 January. The vaccination is free.

Questions and answers about vaccinations

1. How do I book a vaccination appointment?

You will receive an invitation by Digital Post between 13 September and 20 September. Once you receive your invitation, you can book an appointment at www.vacciner.dk.

If you need help to book an appointment for your vaccination, you can contact your region. You can find their phone number here:

  • Capital Region of Denmark: Phone +45 38 64 99 00
  • Region Zealand: Phone +45 70 20 42 33
  • Region of Southern Denmark: Phone +45 99 44 07 17 (press 1)
  • Central Denmark Region: Phone +45 70 23 24 15
  • North Denmark Region: Phone +45 97 64 84 63

2. When can I be vaccinated?

You can be vaccinated from 1 October 2023 until 15 January 2024.

3. Can I have both vaccinations at the same time?

You can safely be vaccinated against influenza and covid-19 at the same time.

However, the vaccines cannot be mixed in the same syringe, so you will need two injections.

4. I have received several invitations to be vaccinated. What should I do?

Many people have received several letters inviting them to be vaccinated against influenza and covid-19. You can see the official invitation sent out by the Danish

Health Authority and Statens Serum Institut here:

Letters with offers of vaccination

The invitation is sent out to everyone aged 65 years or older.

Once you have received this invitation, you can book an appointment at www.vacciner.dk.

If you are under 65 years of age and it is recommended that you should be vaccinated because you are at risk of becoming severely ill, you will not receive an invitation from the Danish Health Authority and Statens Serum Institut, but you can book an appointment at www.vacciner.dk from 20 September 2023.

The other invitations you may have received have been sent out as part of a study.

5. Are there any side effects from the vaccines?

All vaccines can cause side effects, including the influenza and covid-19 vaccines. Some people have a fever or a headache or feel a little sore at the injection site. These are common side effects that go away after a while.

Severe allergic reactions are very rare. If you have previously suffered a severe allergic reaction after being vaccinated or after being injected with any other medicinal product, you should talk to a doctor before being vaccinated.

6. I have been invited to participate in a research project on high-dose influenza vaccines (DANFLU)

If you have already been vaccinated against influenza or covid-19 this autumn – for example as part of a research trial – you should not be vaccinated against influenza or covid-19 again this year.

If you have only been vaccinated against influenza as part of the research trial, but would like to be vaccinated against covid-19, you can book an appointment for covid-19 vaccination at www.vacciner.dk.
