Everyone aged 18 and over can now get the 3rd booster vaccine dose

All Danish citizens over 18 can get their 3rd vaccine dose sooner than expected. Last week, the Danish Health Authority decided to bring forward the booster vaccine for everyone aged 40 and over and invite them to get the top-up vaccine as early as 4,5 months after their 2nd dose. The offer now applies to everyone over the age of 18.

The new and highly contagious Omicron variant is currently spreading in Denmark. This means there is a resurgence of the COVID-epidemic in Denmark with a large and increasing number of infected individuals and a growing number of patients who become so ill from COVID-19 that they need to be admitted to hospital. Therefore, our otherwise healthcare system may become overwhelmed and compromised.

"So far, we have not seen the same increase in admissions as we did during the previous waves of COVID-19. However, the sheer volume of new COVID-19 cases is beginning to be reflected in the number of admissions. We are therefore increasingly concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and the challenges the epidemic poses to our healthcare system, particularly during January and February," says Søren Brostrøm, Director General of the Danish Health Authority.

About half of those currently infected are between 18 and 39, and the proportion of people aged 20 to 29 who test positive for COVID-19 is exceptionally high. Immunity to infection after the 2nd vaccine dose has proved weaker against the new Omicron variant and decreases rapidly, but preliminary data suggest that a 3rd booster dose restores immunity to high levels and will protect you more effectively against infection and severe illness.

"We are in a serious situation because of the new and more contagious variant. Fortunately, many over the age of 40 have already received the top-up booster vaccine. By bringing forward booster vaccination for everyone over the age of 18, the majority of the 18- to 39-year-olds will be able to get their 3rd jab during December and January. In this way, we can increase immunity as much as we possibly can at a time when the infection is spreading at an alarming rate – and thus bring the epidemic under control within a few months," says Director General Søren Brostrøm.

The rollout of the booster jabs applies to anyone born in 1981 or earlier, and they can now get the 3rd dose 140 days after the 2nd dose.

Individuals who turn 18 in 2022 – and 140 days have elapsed since they got the 2nd vaccine dose – will be invited according to the month they were born, i.e., all who turn 18 in the same month will be invited to vaccination simultaneously.

Please note that you can book an appointment at vacciner.dk with your NemId and do not have to wait to receive the invitation in your e-Boks. The Danish Health Authority urges everyone to get the 3rd vaccine dose as soon as possible.
