European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction
The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) exists to provide the European Community and EU member states with 'factual, objective, reliable and comparable information at European level concerning drugs and drug addiction and their consequences'.
Nordic Centre for Welfare, Finland
The Nordic Centre for Welfare, Finland (NVC, an institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers) is a centre for alcohol and drug research.
International collaboration on drugs
The Danish Health and Medicines Authority engages in international collaboration on the drugs problem. The collaboration is extensive because the illegal trade in drugs is international, and because the fight against drugs problems is based on United Nations conventions. Collaboration takes place at several levels:
- The United Nations (UN) and its various offices, especially the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) pool the efforts of countries worldwide.
- The European Union (EU) has a special action plan on drugs and has set up a monitoring centre in Lisbon (EMCDDA).
- The Council of Europe where the member states work together on drugs in the Pompidou Group.
- The Nordic countries which collaborate on alcohol and drug research through the Nordic Centre for Welfare and Social Issues in Finland (NVC).
