This past year has been challenging for adults and children alike. For most of us, the restrictions and upheaval of our normal lives have influenced our mood and well-being.

We have gathered some advice on what you and your friends and family can do to get through these trying times, as well as who to contact if you are struggling to do.

On mental health and well-being

It is perfectly normal to worry about your own and your loved one's health, especially now during COVID-19. However, if your worries take over and make it hard to function or enjoy life, you may be experiencing ‘health anxiety’.

The Danish Health Authority has some advice on what you can do to maintain and strengthen your mental health and well-being:

  • Maintain your usual daily rhythm and get enough sleep
  • Build structure into your day
  • Eat a healthy and varied diet
  • Keep physically active
  • Keep mentally active
  • Keep in touch with the outside world and do something together – even if you have to do it at a distance
  • Accept that this crisis can be a burden for your loved ones
  • Relax and take a break from your worries
  • Don't blame yourself or others for being infected with COVID-19
  • Take care of yourself

Psychological crises and emergencies

Please contact the psychiatric emergency services in your region if you have suicidal thoughts or need immediate psychiatric help.

The regional suicide prevention centres also offer individual psychological counselling if you have not previously been diagnosed or is not currently undergoing treatment for a mental disorder. You own doctor can refer you, but some regions will allow you to contact them without a referral.

You can also contact Livslinen's (the Lifeline's) counsellors anonymously by:

  • Calling the helpline on tel. 70 201 201, open daily from 11 a.m. – 5 a.m.
  • Sending an email via skrivdet.dk You can expect a reply within 1-3 days 
  • Chatting to a counsellor, the chat is open Mondays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
