Medical Doctor

Persons whose medical training has been outside Denmark (including those from the Nordic countries and the EU/EEC countries) must hold Danish authorization to be able to practise medicine in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands.

As a result of international agreements, different rules govern the recognition by Denmark of medical qualifications obtained abroad, depending on the applicant’s country of citizenship, and where the training took place. For this reason, applicants are divided into four groups:

Information to third country applicants
The new registration procedure applies to medical doctors who handed in an application and as of 1 January 2011 have not yet received a decision as well to the medical doctors who handed in an application after 1 January 2011.

Medical doctors who have already received a positive assessment but have not obtained a temporary authorisation to be used in connection with a probationary appointment before 1 January 2011 must follow the new registration procedure.

Please be informed that the National Board of Health passes on information regarding name, address and Danish social security number (cpr.nr.) to the University of Copenhagen, Danish Immigration Services and The Danish Medical Association.

In connection with the administration of an application, all information including personal data is processed electronically by the National Board of Health. Pursuant to the Personal Data Act (persondataloven), all parties involved  - with some exceptions – have e.g. a right to access to the information that is processed.
